GURGAON: Reacting to a fine imposed on a resident for throwing construction rubble by the roadside, some resdients pointed to the flip side of the issue to TOI.
HUDA administrator Praveen Kumar had on Wednesday fined a Sector 10 resident Rs 2,000 for throwing debris by the roadside.
The resident was among 10 houseowners and shopkeepers fined last Wednesday by Praveen Kumar mostly for wasting water.
Residents reacted to the incident, which took place last Wednesday. The residents, however, complained that there was no place earmarked by the administration to dump the construction waste. Last year, city authorities had promised a construction material processing unit in the city. But the plan could never see the light of day with the transfer of the then
MCG commissioner.
“The mounds of debris can be seen all around the city. Authorities need to do something soon to remove the rubble before punishing the residents for throwing rubble in open spaces. They should allocate a place where people can throw the construction waste,” said Harish Capoor, a DLF-I resident. The MCG was to set up a construction and demolition waste processing unit in Kherki Majra along with an eco-waste plant to dispose of electrical waste like tube lights and batteries at a cost of about Rs 6 crore.
The civic agency had also promised to identify 15 waste disposal sites. The plant was to process the debris and produce tiles, kerbstones and pavement blocks among other things. When asked, the HUDA administrator said it would take at least a month for the city to get rid of debris in public places.
Meanwhile, Praveen Kumar on Thursday visited Sector 10 to redress the grievances of the residents who had brought to his notice the persisting problems of the area like broken roads, dysfunctional streetlights, ill-maintained parks and a defunct community centre. The residents of the area in old Gurgaon have been complaining of problems related to sanitation and maintenance for a long time. They allege that the sector was being neglected by the department.
The HUDA administrator inspected the colony early in the morning during a visit that took in parks and the community centre. The residents conveyed their complaints after which officials were directed to take action on them immediately.
“We have been residing in the colony for the past six years as it used to be one of the plush sectors developed by HUDA in old Gurgaon. But after the development of the new sectors, the old sectors were completely neglected by the department,” said Suhani Taneja, a resident.
